IPL Auction 2025: Date, Venue Information and Top Retained Players

Following the IPL 2024 mini-auction, the IPL 2025 features a mega-auction. Each team will have limited retention options, with the remaining players returning to the auction pool. The IPL 2025 auction is expected between December 2024 and February 2025.

IPL Auction Date 2025

The upcoming IPL Mega Auction will likely be a two-day event similar to the one held in 2022. The auctions in 2023 and 2024 occurred in December, so the IPL 2025 auction could happen during the same period, between December 2024 and February 2025.

As the 17th season wraps up, buzz about the next edition is already buzzing. The IPL chairman has confirmed the IPL 2025 Mega Auction and the Right to Match (RTM) card is expected to be available to each franchise. The IPL 2024 Auction marked the first time the bidding war took place outside of India.

Number of Players in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction

There’s no fixed limit on the number of players listed in the IPL auction; it varies yearly based on who signs up and receives approval from their respective cricket boards. According to IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, each team will likely be allowed to retain only 3 or 4 players, similar to the IPL 2022 mega auction, where 204 players were sold for a total of ₹551 crore.

If the retention limit remains at four players per team, the IPL 2025 Mega Auction could see similar figures. However, the number of retained players will be confirmed after discussions between the BCCI and the stakeholders.

IPL 2025 Mega Auction Expected Venues

IPL 2025 is expected to follow the home-and-away format like IPL 2024, with teams possibly playing each other twice throughout the season. The upcoming season is projected to feature 84 matches, up from 74 this year, with the number expected to rise to 94 by 2027.

Categories of Players in IPL 2025 Mega Auction

The IPL 2025 auction will feature players in different categories:

  • Capped Players: Indian players who have represented the national team in any format.
  • Uncapped Players: Indian domestic players who have not yet represented India.
  • Non-Indian Players: Foreign players from associate cricket nations or neighboring countries, either capped or uncapped. Each IPL team can have up to eight foreign players but can only field a maximum of four in a match.
